Mason Clark Associates is lead consultant for 2m restoration

07/03/2012
Mason Clark - Canal Work Mason Clark Associates is lead consultant for the 2m restoration of the Huddersfield Waterfront Quarter. The works will provide a waterfront surrounding to the newly constructed Kirklees College and unlock surrounding development plots owned by Kirklees Council.

The project involves the demolition of an engineering works, site remediation and major engineering works to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Speaking to the Huddersfield Examiner, our Engineer and Director, Graham Helme, said the 200 year old site had to be tested to look for contamination. It was a surprise when the tests came back to reveal only one source of contamination as the site has been home to engineering works all its life.

The canal works also involved the removal of the roof from a 350m long tunnel and the construction of a new lock chamber to raise the water level to that of the adjacent plots.

Close co-operation with British Waterways, Kirklees College and Clugston Construction has allowed the works to be completed within a 5 month canal closure and the College's canal water cooling system inlets and outlet and surface water drainage to be incorporated into the scheme.
