BAE Systems Apprenticeships

05/02/2010
With Apprentice Week taking place, BAE Systems, Brough, is taking the opportunity to celebrate and share its successful Apprenticeship Programme.

The Brough site takes pride in being committed to cater for its' robust Apprenticeship Programmes. Consequently, the programme is very popular, as it gives apprentices the opportunity to gain on the job training whilst studying for further qualifications and having long term prospects within a global company.

The apprenticeships offered are diverse in such that they offer a mixture of skills to be developed into the business. The three routes available are the Craft/Technician Apprenticeship gaining experience in a production environment as either an Aircraft Fitter, a Sheet Metal worker, an Electrician or in the offices as an Engineering Technician, a Software Engineer Apprenticeship and our new apprenticeship in Business Administration. Due to the diversity of apprenticeships, 24 new recruits are taken on each year, with recruitment currently taking place for the September intake.

Despite priority being given to learning skills within the business; the scheme also endeavours to bring out a creative side in the apprentices. The 'Outward Bound' experience run by Brough is a key activity which provides active learning, in and out of the classroom, in unfamiliar settings to inspire character development and self discovery. Apprentices are also encouraged to get involved in Charity Challenge and many have been involved in organising bowling evenings, modelling in the charity fashion show and giving their time to help in volunteering activities such as painting a local care home.

In addition, the company presents 'The Innovation Challenge' to apprentices, enabling them to work in a team to create and produce a product from start to finish. This allows them to project manage and demonstrate their skills, whilst competing against apprentices from other sites.

A further chance for apprentices to develop is for them to support the Education Programme by acting as ambassadors for the site and assisting in the Education Roadshows.

Chris Clewett, a fourth year apprentice at the Brough site, commented 'As well as gaining job experience on cutting edge technology and completing essential qualifications required for a career within engineering; I think the Apprenticeship is excellent as it truly brings out the full potential of people. It provides a diverse training package offering a variety of experiences - from maintaining the site to testing aircraft software for the Hawk Advance Jet Trainer.'

Jacqui McKenzie, Site Training and Capability Manager, said 'BAE Systems is committed to supporting education activities within the local community. Having developed a sustained partnership with South Hunsley School, Brough Primary School and its other feeder primary schools, our aim is to enhance the science, maths and technology curriculum which enthuses children about choosing engineering as a career with BAE Systems through its Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Programme.'

BAE Systems currently has around 1,100 engineering and business apprentices in training and will be recruiting a further 200 in 2010, making it one of the largest employers of apprentices in the UK. The organisation invests £41M per annum in the UK in education and schools activity, university partnerships and skills development for employees. The company is committed to encouraging young people to take an interest in engineering, science, technology and maths and to consider a future career in these areas.
