St Stephen's has been named as the best regeneration project in Yorkshire in the annual Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Pro Yorkshire Award 2008. The award was received on behalf of the partners involved in the scheme at a prestigious event on Friday evening by John Haymes of Hull Forward and David Laycock of St Stephen's.
John Haymes, Director of Property Development at Hull Forward, commented: 'On behalf of the partners involved, we are absolutely delighted to receive this award. It recognises the hard work involved by a number of different organisations, over many years in bringing a project of this size to fruition. Not only does St Stephen's provide an impressive new retail and leisure offer, it has also delivered an excellent new transport interchange, hotel, music school and an upgrade to Ferensway."
"St Stephen's has undoubtedly transformed the city centre, acting as a catalyst for further retail and leisure development and proving highly successful in bringing more people back into the heart of the city. Most importantly it is creating 2500 new jobs for Hull.'
St Stephen's beat stiff competition in the category of 'Regeneration' project from: Crown Court Yard Refurbishment scheme; Ridge Street, Huddersfield; Victoria Mills, Bradford; The Forge Student Village, Sheffield and The Gatehaus, Bradford.
David Laycock, Centre Manager at St Stephen's added: 'It is a fantastic accolade for all those involved in St Stephen's and acknowledges the significant physical and social regeneration impact on this fine City.'
The 'Regeneration' award recognises 'those schemes which have contributed to the overall improvement of urban, rural or coastal decay. It honours outstanding work in the regeneration of renewal of a particular area or structure or group of buildings/structure and covers renovation to a new or original use.
The £200 million St Stephen's project was delivered by ING Real Estate Development UK Ltd, working alongside Hull City Council, Yorkshire Forward and Hull Forward (formerly Hull Citybuild).
