St Stephen’s development hailed as mixed-use Project of the Year at national awards ceremony

24/09/2009
Having opened its doors two years ago, St Stephen's is a success story which continues and what better way to celebrate its second birthday than being named the winner of the Mixed-use Project of the Year at the Regeneration & Renewals Awards 2009.

This year's prestigious ceremony took place yesterday at the Lancaster Hotel in London and once again the £200m St Stephen's development impressed judges with its significant contribution towards Hull's regeneration which has not only dramatically expanded the city's shopping and leisure offer but has boosted the city centre's early evening economy.

John Holmes, Chief Executive at Hull Forward, the city's Economic Development company (EDC), commented: 'Despite being a tough year for many due to the pressures of the current economic climate, on behalf of all partners involved in St Stephen's we are absolutely delighted that the scheme has once again been recognised for its achievements as a very successful mixed-use project which has had a huge positive impact upon the local economy and community at large.'

He added: 'Not only has St Stephen's contributed greatly to the changing physical landscape of the city but it has encouraged further investment in the city with retailers raising their game to compete with the additional shoppers attracted into Hull each day. In addition to providing a new hotel and cinema, it has brought with it a new transport interchange which has revolutionised travel in the city and houses the Albemarle Music School and a new purpose-built home for Hull Truck Theatre, which opened earlier this year completing all components of the scheme.'

Having already been hailed as the 'Best Regeneration Project of the Year' at the international RICS Awards 2008, the recent win builds on its excellent reputation as a quality scheme that has transformed a once derelict area of Hull.

Jim Harris, Centre Manager at St Stephen's, said: 'It is excellent to see St Stephen's recognised alongside some of the best mixed-use projects in the country. Its impact upon Hull's community has been tremendous and has provided a real boost to both the city's daytime and evening economy and has significantly expanded Hull's leisure and cultural offer which is continuing to draw more and more people into the heart of the city.'

He continued: 'In addition the development has had a direct impact on the local community thanks to a number of effective partnerships that have been formed with a variety of organisations such as Hull College through their innovative Retail Academy and the Princes Trust to ensure that opportunities in employment and training are maximised.'
