Healthcare Scientist Receives National Recognition

19/10/2009
Professor Andy Beavis has been awarded a prestigious 'Manufacturer's Award' by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM).

Professor Beavis of Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust has worked in partnership with the University of Hull to develop the VERT (Virtual Environments for Radiotherapy Training) system which provides a virtual reality copy of a radiation therapy room.

The first of its kind in the world VERT gives users the sense of being present in an actual treatment room and offers students and practitioners the chance to hone vital skills without setting foot in the treatment room. Prior to its development, radiotherapy training was severely limited and the only option for practising skills was on real patients, increasing the potential for mistakes.

The IPEM award was presented to Professor Beavis for a significant contribution or contributions to the technology associated with medical physics or clinical engineering. The intention of the award is to recognise successful introduction of new, or the improvement of existing technology in the fields of physics and engineering applied to clinical practice.

It was presented at the IPEM Annual Dinner which was held at the IPEM Annual Conference in Liverpool in September.

Professor Beavis said:

'I am very proud that my professional body has recognised the impact that VERT has had on changing the way in which therapy Radiographers are now trained in England.

'The work was mentioned in the 2007 Cancer Reform Strategy and now the system is installed in training centres in England, Canada, Denmark, Holland and Northern Ireland.'
