2012 to be lightning fast for 15,000 local homes and businesses

24/01/2012
KC - Lightning fast Local communications provider KC has today announced the additional locations across Hull and East Yorkshire where it will install lightning fast fibre optic broadband.

During 2012, the next phase of KC's multi-million pound investment means its new KC Lightstream and KC Lightstream Business services - launched today - will be available to 15,000 homes and businesses on its network. Fibre installations will take place in parts of east and west Hull, as well as to the north of Hull, in Beverley and across several East Yorkshire villages.

KC customers in the fibre roll-out areas will be able to access broadband at 100Mbps, transforming their online experience and bringing the full power of the internet to their lives.

KC's technology of choice for delivering fibre broadband is Fibre To The Premises (FTTP), which gives faster download speeds because fibre is connected directly to a customer's home or business.

In contrast, fibre deployments in most other parts of the UK deliver slower speeds of up to 40Mbps. This is because BT's technology of choice is Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC), where fibre is laid to street cabinets and existing copper cables used to complete the connection to customers' premises.

Kevin Walsh, KC's Chief Executive, said: 'We've embarked on this ambitious fibre roll-out programme to give our customers the best-connected homes and businesses in the UK. This will give them access to the world of information, communication and entertainment that the internet offers at lightning speeds.

'At home and in the workplace, we're increasingly living our lives online. In the same way that the growth of broadband has led to an explosion in online retailing, entertainment and social media, lightning fast broadband will bring with it new opportunities that will change the way we live and work.

'This investment is the start of something very special for our region that we at KC are immensely proud of, and which I hope will make local people proud too. It's not just great news for the families and businesses that will have access to lightning fast broadband. It's bigger than that. At its heart our fibre roll-out is an investment in the future of Hull and East Yorkshire, a catalyst for change that has the potential to transform the region's fortunes and make us an attractive location for further public and private sector investment.'

Fibre for a fiver
KC's new fibre broadband services include six packages for consumers and five packages for businesses. The packages have been developed using feedback from customers who have been trialling lightning fast broadband since it was introduced last September.

Kevin Walsh said: 'Our commitment to using the best fibre technology the world can offer means we're giving our customers a Rolls-Royce service at a price that offers incredible value for money. We're offering fibre for a fiver - for about 5 more per month than our most popular traditional copper broadband and phone bundle, customers can have lightning fast speeds that will transform their online experience.'

For consumers, there are four KC Lightstream fibre broadband-only packages priced from 25 per month. Customers can choose a download speed to suit their needs, from a superfast 45Mbps to a lightning fast 100Mbps. They can also choose from a range of download allowances up to a massive 600GB, with unlimited overnight downloads. There are also two bundles which package phone and broadband services together, priced from 35 per month.

For businesses, KC has introduced four KC Lightstream Business broadband-only packages that range in price from 25 to 100 per month, depending on the speed, download allowance and level of service and support required. There is also a business bundle available that includes a great-value business call package.

Homes and businesses across Hull and East Yorkshire set to benefit
More than 10,000 of the homes and businesses that KC will be passing with fibre this year are within Hull's postcode boundaries, with a further 5,000 in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Properties in the Grovehill area of Beverley will be the first to receive KC's lightning fast broadband service this year, with customer installations starting in two weeks' time on Monday 6th February. Other installations in Beverley will include the Grange Way, Lockwood Road, Butt Lane, Old Manor Lawns, Lincoln Way, Poplars Way and Norwood areas.

Further fibre installations in 2012 are planned for the following areas (subject to detailed engineering surveys):
