Functional Foods

Opportunities:
  • To expand the capacity of Hull's functional food research centre to capitalise on opportunities in a growing market.
  • The requirement for legal services to food and drink companies to support regulatory requirements.
  • Create synergies with the UK's highest concentration of food companies based here in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Hull's history in nutrition started in the 1930s when a small local co-operative, knowing its health benefits, saw the market potential for the commercial production of Cod Liver Oil. From this modest start, Seven Seas is now a major international healthcare company, at the forefront of the UK vitamin, mineral and supplement market.

Today there is still a growing demand for food and drink products with a health benefit or disease-preventing properties. The functional food research centre here in Hull is carrying out research and clinical trials amongst its patient base on behalf of food companies to support their claims.

The centre is undertaking activity for the UK Food Standards Agency and European Food Safety Authority as well as European food companies including Nestl, Barry Callebaut, and Alpro.

The centre is also developing its own soy-based ingredients to help companies develop new food and drink products with specific health benefits.

Hull is now building on the success that the 15-strong team at the centre has achieved to create a European centre of excellence.

The investment programme will bring enhanced capabilities to carry out high quality clinical trials for product development, good manufacturing practice food preparation facilities, conference facilities and an educational resource for both patients and healthcare professionals.

The facility will be able to take a product from its inception through clinical trials to build evidence of its health claim. The centre will also prepare the necessary documentation required by the European Food Safety Authority to maximise the product's success.

The Honei Project

The HONEI (Humber Obesity, Nutrition, Education and Innovation) Project is creating an innovative, collaborative and productive environment for public and commercial enterprises with interests in food and health.

The centre will use ground-breaking approaches to develop a multidisciplinary approach aimed at improving health and reducing health inequalities, particularly with respect to obesity.

By linking contemporary research and development with existing research partnerships amongst the departments and faculties within the University of Hull, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, City Health Care Partnership (ex Hull PCT) and the Hull York Medical School we are maximising expertise available addressing obesity and the diseases associated with it.

These partnerships provide a focus for research and development by working with the healthcare services, industry to address both the national and international health issues of obesity and the problems that result from it. The outcomes will lead the way in obesity management by developing innovative methods of education, prevention and treatment by growing and strengthening effective partnerships with pharmaceutical and commercial food companies.

Project HONEI provides a unique platform to raise the profile of the region, whilst tackling the regional, national and global obesity problem.

Our continued aim is to develop and showcase world-leading clinical and academic expertise that resides within the city and attract new business interest and investment in a subject of regional, national and international importance.

The project is fully supported by the University of Hull and is led by Professor Steve Atkin, drawing on the expertise held in his department. He is assisted by Steve Smyth as Project Manager, Hilary Hamer as Industry Liaison Manager and a dedicated food scientist and research team.

There are more than 15,000 companies in Yorkshire and Humber's food and drink sector - the largest concentration in the UK. This provides a significant opportunity to create synergies and maximise market opportunities with local food companies.
