Food

With the largest concentration of food industries in the UK, employing around 45,000 in our food sector, it's easy to see why we are the natural choice for companies looking to invest in this sector.

The region's strong marine heritage accounts for a high concentration of activity based on the processing, wholesaling and retailing of fish and with the largest and most modern fish auction in the UK. As an added bonus, here we have more cold storage facilities than anywhere else in the country, accounting for approximately 70% of the UK's fish processing economy.

We also process a substantial amount of food grade oils and fats with other important supply chain activities including growing cereals and other crops, pig farming and the production and preserving of meat and poultry products and bulk and liquid yeast for the brewing and baking industry.

Well-established international companies including Chaucer food, Vion Food Group, AAK and Mauri AB UK, continue to invest heavily in Hull with big players such as Cranswick Country Foods, Greencore Cakes & Desserts and Aunty Bessies Ltd providing jobs for around 2,100 people.

In fact, most of the region's food is produced in and around Hull and the area continues to be recognised for its strength in the food sector.

The Honei Project

The HONEI (Humber Obesity, Nutrition, Education and Innovation) Project is creating an innovative, collaborative and productive environment for public and commercial enterprises with interests in food and health.

The centre will use ground-breaking approaches to develop a multidisciplinary approach aimed at improving health and reducing health inequalities, particularly with respect to obesity.

By engaging with food businesses locally, regionally and internationally we aim to integrate with their growth and development in addition to facilitating the development of new knowledge based enterprises, novel functional food products and provide clinical testing facilities in one unique facility.

Aspartame Study

The University of Hull is to conduct an independent study, funded by the Food Standards Agency to assess whether the artificial sweetener, aspartame causes symptoms in those people who feel sensitive to it.

Aspartame is 150 times sweeter than sugar and is found in more than 4,000 products including diet soft drinks, cereal bars, yoghurts and chewing gum.

The national study will be carried out by Professor Stephen Akin at the University of Hull, in collaboration with colleagues at the Hull York Medical School and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS.

It is hoped that this study will help to design a larger international study, which will provide the information needed to inform governments and the European Union on whether the consumption of aspartame is related to symptoms.
